She hadn't meant for it to happen, but even so, it was quite the sight.

Neji was NOT amused, or at least he came off that way.

[It took me six and a half hours to just think of something to post.]

(She hadn't meant for it to happen, but even so, it was quite the sight.

Neji was NOT amused, or at least he came off that way.)

“I’m not doing this, Tenten. You can forget it,” Neji said defiantely, crossing his arms over his chest.

“But Neji,” Tenten tried to suppress her giggled, “you look so…cute…”

“I am not cute!”

“Okay, adorable,” the brunette reached out the fix the green flaps on the suit. “Besides, someone has to do this and since I’m sick, you have to do it.”

“Oh, you’re far from sick,” Neji tried his best to look intimidating, “you’re deranged!” It seemed, though, from the years the duo had spent together that his glares rendered no effect on the Chinese teen.

It was Christmas Eve in Konoha. All of the Konoha 11 had been given specific duties for the season. Naruto had been chosen to be Santa Clause while Hinata was at his side as Mrs. Clause. Lee, Kiba, Chouji, Ino, Sakura, and Tenten were chosen to be Santa’s elves. Shikamaru was the star of the show as he was playing Rudolph. Shino’s job had been the easiest since he was taking pictures (he had defiantly stood up to Tsunade and told her he would never be caught in an elf outfit). Neji, too, had refused to join in on the events, making up some excuse that he had duties at the Hyuuga compound. The day before the scheduled ‘Meet Santa’ event, Tenten came down with the flu.

So, the two were in the Weapon’s Mistress’s apartment. Neji had to get ready somewhere.

“Neji, you’ll scare the children with that awful scowl,” she coughed into her hand.

Tenten sighed, “I don’t ask you for many things, you know that. I was excited to be participating, but I can’t since I’m sick! I don’t want to risk anyone else getting this awful stuff.” Since begging wasn’t going to work in her favor, Tenten did the unimaginable. She puckered out her bottom lip and proceeded to give him ‘The Look’.

Neji sighed in defeat. He was never able to resist those big brown eyes, “…fine. I’ll do it, but this is the only-”

“-time you’ll ever do anything like this. I know,” she smiled and wrapped her blanket around her. “And remember, you’re doing this for the children of Konoha who have lost their parents in battle and have no one to spend Christmas with. It’s for a good cause.”

“Yeah, yeah…whatever,” the Hyuuga prodigy was starting to understand why Shikamaru had branded women so ‘troublesome’. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to be an elf, but rather he had planned on being at Tenten’s apartment when she got home this evening. It was Christmas Eve, after all. He had spent hours shopping for the perfect gift for her and had planned on giving it to her tonight.

It seemed as though fate still had a way of laughing in his face.

“You better get going before it gets too late,” Tenten stood and ushered him to the door. “You don’t want to be late, Santa’s Little Helper.”

Neji scowled, “That’s not funny and you know it.”

“It’s only for three hours, Neji. Try to look like you’re half enjoying yourself,” she smiled and lifted herself up on her tip toes, giving him a peck on the cheek.

He didn’t respond. He opened the door to her apartment and stepped out into the cold where he knew hell awaited. As soon as the door was shut, Tenten waited until Neji’s figure disappeared before throwing off the blanket around her shoulders. She had plans and a small cough and a few chills wouldn’t keep her down.

When Neji returns to the Hyuuga house tonight, he won’t know what hit him. Tenten rubbed her hands together with a smirk before she set off to get her plan underway.
GeeBee: NejiTen Dip [Naruto]goldberry on December 18th, 2007 03:19 am (UTC)
Neji sighed, standing stoically in front of a fake Christmas present taller than himself as children lined up speak to "Santa". It had taken Naruto only seconds to fall into the role and he was now HO HO HO-ing in a booming voice that was sure to deafen the ears of every young child that dared to sit on his lap. Neji thought about warning them but thought better of it after getting kicked in the knee and his hair pulled twice.

Instead he was keeping half an eye on the crowd for troublemakers (that's all that was needed from a Hyuuga) while most of his attention was on the small box in his coat pocket. He found himself bringing it out at the oddest times, turning it between his fingers before putting it back. If he cared to admit it to himself, he was a little anxious about whether or not she would like it. They never really made a big show out of gifts for each other, but this one...this one was going to be different.

"Oh! Neji! What is that?" Lee asked, skipping over like demented elf he was. He was positively brimming with good cheer even as he looked curiously as the box in Neji's palm. (Green was Lee's favorite color. He was seriously thinking about keeping the costume.) "Have you gotten a present for a special someone?" Lee's eyes were wide, shimmering, ready to spill over with waterfalls of love.

Neji scowled and moved his hand away. "It's not-"

"IT'S FOR ME!" a small voice hollered and the small box was swiped from Neji's fingers before he quite realized what was happening. Blinking, he watched as an eight year old boy ran full tilt through the crowd, screaming in delight and holding Neji's gift above his head.

Instantly, Neji took off after him, mentally cursing his curly-toed shoes, colds, and Christmas in general.

[After a moment of hyperness, this is my product. XD]

It was absurd, silly, immature, and downright DEGRADING that he, Hyuuga Neji, the genius of Konoha, (and not to mention, the man who commanded better control over his hair than most women) had slipped so low as to chase an eight year-old boy through a crowd filled with grabbing little fingers (belonging to grabbing little buggers)in an elf suit...with curly-toed shoes to boot. If he'd been any less of the mature being that he considered himself to be, Neji would've torn off the darn clothes right then and there and chased after the boy in his birthday suite. As it was, people were staring and he was too preoccupied with stumbling after the boy (and tripping over those hideous elf shoes that had to have been made by none other than that demented Lee-elf)to entertain that thought very long.

Shoving aside one of his fellow elves, who must have been Kiba by the sound of that rather loud curse, he chased after the boy. The brat was practically dancing around with the box, turning happy skips around people in his path, and then, when Neji was seriously reconsidering his previous idea, the boy halted suddenly. Little fingers moving to remove the box's lid, an inquisitive face ready to peer inside...

Neji let loose. LEAPING OVER Sakura, who was crouched down and involved in deep conversation with a small girl, he tore after the boy. Knocking aside whatever lay in his path, be it child of elf (witnesses would later testify to seeing an unfortunate Lee sailing through the air), he parted the crowd.

The little boy looked up to see hell bearing down on him.
that's what she said: Neji/Tentenintimidate on December 19th, 2007 07:00 am (UTC)
The little boy let out a giant squawk of fear before throwing the box square at Neji's jaw. And in the following three seconds Neji cursed inwardly at the impact of box to face, caught the box with swift fingers, and let out a pained grunt as he fell flat on the cold floor.

The look of fear quickly disappeared from the little boy's eyes as he burst out laughing, pointing a chubby finger at Neji's face. If Neji had been anyone other than himself, he would have bit the damn finger right off the kid's box-snatching hand.

That little son of a--

Neji whipped his head in the direction of the shout. He groaned inwardly as Lee's face emerged from the crowd. Neji slowly pushed himself up, dusting off his clothes, and shoved the box as deep as he could into his coat pocket.

"Neji, are you alright?!" Lee gasped, circling Neji frantically in what Neji assumed, was a check to makes sure Neji wasn't injured. The only thing that was injured at the moment was his pride, and that wasn't something Lee could fix. Not that Neji would ever want Lee, out of all people, to be the one fixing him anyway.

"I'm fine," he replied, trying to keep the sour look that was threatening to make its way across his face at bay. From the corner of his eye, he could see Sakura firmly reprimanding the box-stealing child.

"Are you sure?" Lee asked in concern, still making circles around Neji. Neji grabbed Lee by the shoulders to stop the annoying circling and opened his mouth to let Lee know that he was positive, when a booming laugh blared from the doorway.

Lee and Neji turned their heads sharply and found themselves gaping in shock at the sight.

Cosmo-san: Gai [ kicking ass and taking names ]blooming_cosmo on December 19th, 2007 02:55 pm (UTC)
With a ping, Gai flashed his teeth in a brilliant smile. He seemed like his natural self, except now with a matching green hat and curly green shoes. The bells on each dinged and jingled as he came up to his students with glee.

"Neji! I am glad to see you joining us with your joyous Christmas spirit! I thought you said you would be busy tonight," Gai said as he stood next to his students with a hand on his hip.

"You look ridicu-"

"AMAZING!" Lee shouted before Neji could finish. He pulled out his notepad and began taking notes on the bells. He wondered to himself why he hadn't thought to put them on, and the answer came soon enough to him...his teacher was a genius. This was only to be expected.

"Thank you, Lee," Gai said proudly before raising a thumb at him.

Neji lowered his head in defeat as the kids around him gathered around his teacher. At least it bought him time to recuperate from the recent run. He passed through the crowd, but stopped as soon as he felt a gentle tug on the lower half of his outfit.

Neji turned around to see his cousin Hinata in her red Mrs. Claus dress, looking as embarrassed as she looked pretty.

"Neji-nii-san," she called quietly.

"What is it?" the Hyuuga male replied, half-annoyed.

She offered him a neatly-wrapped medium-shaped box.

The boy blinked. "Is that for me?"

"Y-yes...I figured you aren't coming to the Hyuuga Clan's party later tonight, so I wanted to give it to you now, or else I won't get the chance."

Neji was touched that Hinata was kind enough to give him a present, and suddenly felt very guilty that he had not gotten her anything. After moments of fighting mentally with himself, he finally took out the small box from his pocket.

"Here... This is for you."

Hinata smiled shyly and blushed even more as she accepted the gift. She thanked him deeply and returned to Santa Claus's side.

Neji sighed. Great... Now he had to find another gift for Tenten. And time was running out.

(I have a huge chem test tomorrow but instead, I chose to write! Love me.)

He was sitting on a bench far, far away from the festivities when Hinata found him two hours later.

“Neji-nii-san? What’s wrong?”

Neji shook his head. “Nothing.”

They sat in silence for a while before Hinata asked, “Does this have to do with the present you gave me earlier?”

When Neji stiffened, Hinata knew she struck a nerve.

“Why would you say that?”

“Oh...no reason. Just figured that something as beautiful as this wasn’t really meant for me.”

He looked up and in her hand was the present that he had originally bought for Tenten.

He sputtered. “You weren’t supposed to open it this early!”

“You weren’t supposed to give it to me in the first place.”

Neji blinked. Though he and Hinata had never really been on the best of terms with each other, she still knew him like few people did. And somehow she figured out that he gave her what was rightfully Tenten’s present not so much as a gesture of good will, but to placate his own guilty conscience. Feeling even worse than before, Neji turned away.

“I’m sorry.”

Hinata smiled. “It’s alright, Neji-nii-san.” Boldly, she reached over, grabbed Neji’s hand, and pressed the object into it.

“She’s going to love it.”
sahara storm: [Naruto] NejiTensahara_storm on December 21st, 2007 01:06 pm (UTC)
Relief flooded Neji. He hadn't known exactly how he was going to get Tenten another present; not one as good as this one, anyway. He gave Hinata a tiny smile, and then looked around.

“Well,” he said, sounding slightly defeated, “I supposed to should… get back to the festivities.” He looked as though he was suggesting that they jump off a cliff onto a rocky beach. Where the rocks were particularly pointy.

Hinata smiled.

“Well, I should be getting back to Naruto-kun, but I don’t see why you can’t finish your job here. Santa has other helpers; I’m sure we’ll manage.”

Neji was about to protest; as much as he would rather drive a spoke through his head than keep watch over bratty little children for even five more minutes, it would not be fair to abandon his comrades. Before he could say anything though, his sharp eyes picked up movement on the far side of the park.

He put up a hand to silence Hinata, and peered closer. It was a person, hurrying down one of the paths leading back to the gathering. And judging by the make of the clothing, the way the person moved, the hair

It was Tenten!

Neji started indignantly. She was supposed to be in bed, resting; why in the world was she out here? She could worsen her cold!

He looked at her more closely. She was moving very furtively, looking left and right every few seconds. And she seemed to be hiding something under her cloak. Neji narrowed his eyes. She was definitely up to something, he concluded as she rounded the corner and disappeared from sight.

Neji said a quick goodbye to Hinata, and determinedly set out in the direction Tenten had disappeared.

"Dammit, he wasn't supposed to see..." Tenten had little choice but to do the obvious: run. It would help if she had learned jutsu that could help her evasion, but there was no time for that now.

Neji, however, wasn't much farther behind. And with his skill, he would easily catch up to her. He had to know what she was doing here, and why.

There was a startling stop to the rustling noise of trees leaves and such. He briefly stopped, taking a minute to figure out her new direction.

He grunted in defeat. No luck.

The gift he had planned to surprise Tenten with was warm in his hand now, still slightly opened by Hinata. "Please don't tell me she saw from Hinata-sama..."

This year, he wanted it to be a true surprise. What were the chances of that now?

There was a timidly high pitched voice in the distance. "Neji nii-sama! Come quickly! Something is happening by the Christmas tree!"

"Is my presence even necessary?" He mumbled spitefully.

"Yes, please hurry!"

He was definitely not in the mood for this.

Cassandra's Destinymycassandra on December 22nd, 2007 11:29 am (UTC)
The scene he entered into was nothing cheery for the holidays -- far from it actually. Little children were rounded up at the side, mixed reactions evident on their innocent faces. A handful was wide-eyed in fear, utterly shocked by the turn out of events; others were making a ruckus, loudly cheering on what Neji thought was a tactless main attraction for the night.

At the hub of the activity center were Naruto and Kiba beating each other up to a pulp. To the kids, it was Santa Claus beating up his main elf.

"What happened?" Neji's voice came out hoarse, breathing uneven from his pursuit of Tenten.

It took a moment before Sakura tore away her gaze from the fight. "Naruto and Kiba got into a fight."

He fought the urge to scowl at the girl's reply. Even he could have told her that.

"What are the idiots fighting about?"

"Fighting about?" Her perplexity was evident in her eyes, and Neji could not help but wonder if Sakura was normally dazed during the holidays.

"Yes, what are they fighting about?"

No answer.

With Kiba's loud curses and Naruto's forceful blows serving as background music, he concluded that the Christmas season had a mystifying effect on the female half of the population. First it was Tenten, who was definitely deranged for asking him to dress in such an outfit and take her place as Santa's elf. Then it was Hinata, who had no trouble dressing up as Naruto's wife that night and had absolutely no second guesses about approaching him and speaking in complete sentences. Now it was Sakura, who, normally had a good head on her shoulders, is currently spacing out on such a simple query.

He watched her as she shot her friend a nervous glance before completely fixating her eyes on him. "Ino, Neji was asking what Naruto and Kiba were fighting about. Would you happen to know why?"

"Who was asking?" He bobbed his head slightly and saw Ino walking to their direction, a crying child of no more than four years old in her hand. "Who's asking about the fight? I already told Chouji they're not really mad at each other. Tenten just..." She stopped dead on her tracks and her face fell. "Oh hi, Neji."

The child tugged Ino's skirt, his face pulled into a frown. "Lady, why is Santa so mean?"

"Honey, Santa is just...er, getting his exercise! All that time spent making toys for all you kids made him, uhh, over his appropriate weight!" Ino laughed a loud, fake laugh.

Neji's eyes narrowed, and he was about to repeat his question when Sakura spoke up.

"Ino-pig, why are Naruto and Kiba...er, Santa and his elf 'exercising?'"

notesonlove on December 23rd, 2007 03:31 am (UTC)
Neji quirked his eyebrow, waiting impatiently, and Ino appraised him critically. She spotted the clenched fist, and her lips quirked up into a smirk.

Instantly, she was by his side, her fingers deftly prying open his. Guard down, the precious gift dropped from his hand and onto the ground.

Neji was right about to murder Ino when she reached down, snatched it up, and turned it over in her hand.

Sakura gaped, her mouth forming a little 'o' as she breathed, "Neji... did you buy that?!"

Irritated, Neji moved to snatch it back away from Ino, who bit the air between them childishly, flipping her blonde hair from her eyes as she closed her palm over Neji's gift.

Grabbing hold of Neji's hand, she tugged him down the street, giving a holler for Naruto and Kiba that their fight was done, and a yell behind her shoulder for Sakura to tidy things up.

Santa and his helper stopped, watching Ino drag a shocked and very irritated Neji, green hats and all. Naruto grinned underneath his white beard, high-fiving Kiba.

"Job well-done, dattebayo!"

Neji grit his teeth, summoning faint blue chakra to travel to his hand and Ino let go as if it burned.

"Damnit Neji I was helping you, you asshole!"

Neji's frown deepened, and he extended his hand, palm face up.

"Give it back now, Yamanaka," he muttered, his voice icy and threatening.

Ino rolled her eyes and glanced furtively around them, "Not here, Neji."

But Neji's stubborn will won out, and he mentally stamped his foot on the ground.

"Give it back."

A mixture of emotions passed over Ino's face, before she stuck out her tongue, turned on her heel, and ran.

Neji gave chase, thinking how this was the third time today, and how he was definitely going to kill something, or someone today.

Tenten gasped for breath as she ducked behind a large tree. She tried to get her breathing under control. But that was easier said than done. Her recent illness robbed her of her stamina. That had been close! She silently thanked Ino and Hinata for the distraction.

Tonight was the night. She knew that Neji appreciated her as a teammate, as a friend, and as a damn fine kunoichi. Neji, with his eyes, could see more clearly than most. But she was certain he never even noticed that one of his teammates didn’t have a Y-chromosome. And as much as she cherished those qualities, she wanted him to sit up and notice her as a girl, as a woman.

If all went well, after tonight, he wouldn’t be able to see her as anything but a woman.

She briefly thought of backing out. (She was still sick.) But after so many weeks of planning with the other girls, if she didn’t go through with it tonight, she didn’t think she’d have the courage to try again. She was a ninja, damn it! She wouldn’t chicken out. Resolve firmed, she continued towards her destination…

Neji used to have dignity.

Neji used to have the 'I'm a resentful and powerful branch-family member' thing going for him.

So when did it turn out to be like this? Why was he in a Santa suit, tackling down a girl who had extremely long hair, in the middle of a very large audience? (The long hair was remarkable because it kept getting into his mouth, which was extremely undignified--oh, who was he kidding, this whole thing was a sham.) Finally, he had managed to wrench open Ino's hand and pocketed the important gift once more, and stood up to dust his hands.

He gathered up his shreds of dignity, and pulled himself slightly taller. "I demand an explanation," he said coldly. The entire situation was ridic--

He turned briefly, to what he believed was somebody going for the exit--

"A-ah! Neji, look!" Ino tugged down her ponytail and began to do her hair-flipping thing, blinking her wide eyes at him, stationing herself at a suggestive pose in front of him. "Oh, Neji."

"Oh, Neji," Sakura said, in a more annoyed voice than suggestive, "Come back, your shift isn't up."

"It's getting late," he said solemnly, trying to ignore Ino's surprisingly disturbing girly motions. "Are we almost done?" He resolved to have a long talk to Tenten afterwards. A long, long talk. Longer than the eternity felt when Gai-sensei and Lee began their charades.

"Almost done," Sakura nodded amicably. "But you need to do one last thing before you can leave . . ."

"Almost done," Sakura nodded amicably. "But you need to do one last thing before you can leave . . ."

Neji decided those were words that sounded nearly synonymous with the death call of the grim reaper. He started to conclude that women hand been doing nothing but manipulating him all day. Tenten made him come here- ogling him with those big, wavering (slightly crusty) almond eyes and her button nose tinged red with illness. Ino was waving her hair around like a propeller and Sakura was threatening to use brute force, just to have him what, stand here? He just wanted to get home to his sick best friend and away from snotty nose kids and evil over flirty banshees. Home. To Tenten. He didn't even live there and he was associating the girl with delicious tea he didn't ask her to fix and smiles he couldn't stop from spreading aacross his face.

Wait a second. He was Hyuuga Neji. That meant something. Well, it at least meant he could decidedly use his mad ninja skills to fool all of the peons (read: friends) into thinking he was really here. All he had to do was use a bunshin-kawarimi combo on that overly large and tackily wrapped present box over there...then he could escape through the dressing rooms....

Tenten resolved her self with a quick whiff from her Vicks 44 nasal inhaler. By now she started changing into her ridiculously cute and simulaneously tacky out fit chosen by none other than Ino. Going through with things reguarless of how ridiculous they seemed was the Team Gai Way! Ore at least Lee and Gai's methodology. 'Might as well borrow it for a minute'...

"Just a minute, Sakura-san," Neji said before starting in the direction of the gigantic fake present. He hadn't taken more than two steps however when he found his path blocked by a certain pink-haired kunoichi, "I don't think so, Neji. You've caused more than enough trouble today. The least you could do is stick around here for another half hour or so."

'A half hour!' Neji thought incredulously, 'there's no way I'm staying here that long.' He frowned - Sakura seemed to have returned to her senses, perhaps he could persuade her to change her mind so he began in (what he considered to be) a pacifying tone, "You are right. I have caused some trouble today but that's precisely why you should let me leave. Obviously I'm not meant to do this kind of thing."

A stubborn look appeared on Sakura's face and she crossed her arms, "Don't even try it, Hyuuga. You're not going anywhere."

Neji practically growled in frustration - this was the last time he would ever agree to do something so asinine! All it had done was cause him undue stress and injury. Then he narrowed his eyes at her - there was no way that he was going to allow this kunoichi to stop him from leaving.

Meanwhile back at the farm...

Tenten was finally finished changing into her outfit. She stuck her head out of the alleyway that she had changed in (She decided not to wait until she got home, just in case Neji caught her before) and after making sure that the coast was clear, she stepped out. Then unable to contain herself, she slipped over to the nearest shop window and checked her reflection.

Her mouth dropped open in shock - she looked even better than when she'd first tried on the outfit. If this outfit didn't have the desired effect on Neji, then something was obviously very wrong with him. Tenten stepped back and sighed in relief - she'd been afraid that she would look terrible, considering the hurried manner in which she'd been forced to dress. She looked around and then began making her way quickly back to her apartment. She still had to get the apartment ready - after all, the outfit was only the beginning...
