Well um, I'm not very good when it comes to writing fanfics, so could anyone give me some feedback? I really appreciate both good and 'bad' comments. Thanks!
And sorry if you don't get to read a lot of Neji's thoughts. Most of it is from Tenten's POV. Sorta. I have yet to get this writing thing down. And yes, the POVs are a little screwed up in some places.
Title: Under the Stars
Character/Pairing: NejixTenten, of course.
Rating: T to be safe.
Summary: A setup meeting by Gai and Lee turns into something else.
Tenten watched as the stars appeared, one by one. She couldn't help but smile at the silence, the peacefulness. No Lee or Gai-sensei running around yelling something about the "springtime of youth" or any other nonsense she didn't understand. Laying back on the grass, she put her arms behind her head and sighed.
It seemed so quiet. Moments like this were rare, since she was always threatening to toss a kunai at Lee's head or train with Neji...
Neji! She wondered what he was doing right now. Unlike other girls who had chased him, she kept her feelings hidden. It was better this way, as friends. She sighed and admired the stars above her.
But wait, she never had the time for moments like this. So why was it happening now?
She didn't know. But it didn't matter, all she wanted was a night to herself.
Her arms and legs still ached from practice with Neji a few hours before. It was just so quiet... she felt herself drifting into unconsciousness until she sensed someone's presence coming towards her.
'Damn it, can't I get a few moments of peace?' she thought as she automatically reached for a kunai.
Too slow. Someone's hand caught her arm before she could grab it. Tenten struggled to wrench her arm away from whoever had disturbed her.
"Tenten. It's me." A familiar voice drifted to her ears.
"N-Neji?" she asked with uncertainty. She felt the grip on her arm loosen as he took back his hand. The place where he had held her was still warm. Or maybe it was her imagination?
She sat up and tried to make out his face in the dim moonlight to see his expression. No success.
"What are you doing here?" he asked in his usual tone, blank.
"I could ask you the same question." She retorted back at him, laying down again. After all, he did interrupt her moment. But then again... Neji wasn't much of a talker. It would probably be the same if he was there anyway.
He didn't respond, only stared up at the dark sky lit with hundreds of tiny stars.
Neji kept a calm expression, as always. But he didn't know what made him just rush in there and grab her arm.
As he tried to settle his thoughts, he reminded himself that this was Tenten. Tenten. She was the only girl he associated with, and over time, without knowing it, he had grown fond of her. One reason was that he definitely didn't want to spar with Lee. Or Gai-sensei. But the real reason he didn't quite understand. He cared about her.
"Do you come out here often just to stare at the sky?" Neji asked, to break the silence.
"No. You think I'd usually have time to do this?"
"Then why now?"
She didn't see where this was going.
"Why now?" he repeated, his words accidentally spoken with a hint of curiosity.
Tenten pondered this for a moment. "Because it's nice."
He felt a little dizzy at the sound of her voice. What was it about her that was different than the other annoying girls he had encountered? She was just another girl. Neji would never admit it, at least not aloud, but he knew that he did have some feelings for her. Yes. The great Hyuuga Neji had feelings. For a girl. Romantically.
He tried to ease the awkward silence between them.
"Not because Gai-sensei told us to meet here for something 'extra important?'" he said as matter-of-factly.
Tenten gave him a confused look, but he wasn't looking at her when he spoke. And then it hit her. She tried to picture the fazy memories of what Gai-sensei had said after practice earlier today.
"Now I know you're all very tired, but you must let the flames of youth bring you energy and liveliness! For I have arranged something extra important tonight. Be promptly back here again at 9 o' clock sharp!"
"Hai, Gai-sensei!" the mini-version of Gai shouted.
"That's the spirit, Lee!"
Neji had shot daggers at them with his famous glare. Tenten had rolled her eyes and yawned.
"Oh! Right." She pretended to know and managed to keep a normal tone. Was it really 9 o' clock already? "But they're not here."
"I noticed that already." Neji said calmly, but Tenten could see the vein popping out of his forehead, even in the darkness. She restrained herself from laughing.
But where the Hell were they? It felt like they've been waiting for hours. Maybe they did, since she noticed the stars had multiplied quickly and that the sky turned darker.
Tenten lazily stretched out on the grass and wondered what they were doing. In the midst of her contemplating, she felt someone grab her hand.
She abruptly sat up, trying to ignore the feeling of butterflies in her stomach. "Neji?"
Tenten squinted to make out the outline of his figure. And her breath caught in her throat as she stared into his silver white eyes, which heavily contrasted against the sky. Maybe her vision was blurring, but she thought she might have seen a smile form on his lips.
"Tenten." The way he said her name made her shiver, but she didn't know why.
"What?" She tried to keep her voice from cracking.
"It's getting late. They're taking too long to get here. Let's just go." He spoke in short, curt sentences.
Tenten felt her cheeks heating up as he was still holding onto her hand. She stood up, thinking he would let go.
Instead, he stood with her. He didn't let go.
He had done it again without thinking. Why was this happening to him? He decided to blame it on hormones.
She turned to retaliate, only to be met by those eyes of his. His face was about an inch away from hers. Her heartbeat quickened. She couldn't help but notice the look in his eyes, but what was that look? She had seen it somewhere before.
And Tenten silently gasped. It was the look Lee had when he spied on that Sakura girl from a distance.
"Tenten." He was so close she could feel his breath on her own lips.
She gulped. Tenten knew she wanted this, and she had been waiting for this moment, but no words came out as she opened her mouth.
But it didn't matter, as Neji took the opportunity to press his lips against hers and slipped his tongue through them.
Tenten stiffened, but eased closer to him as she felt him release his hold on her hand and wrap his arms around her. Her exhaustion forgotten, she placed her arms around his neck to deepen the kiss.
For that moment, the world seemed to melt away.
And they kissed right there, with the stars as their witness.
Little did they know that Gai and Lee were hiding in the bushes, their green spandex suits blending in with the surroundings.
"Ah it's beautiful, youthful love... isn't it, Lee?" Gai half-whispered and half-shouted at Lee.
They both had tears running down their face as they watched the private moment.
"It was a great idea, Gai-sensei."
